JOB SUMMARY:

The Mid-Ohio Food Collective (MOFC), along with its partners, is proud to introduce the 2024 Farm Mentorship Program to bring awareness and education to the local community about sustainable food production. This program will use principles of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) combined with urban agriculture techniques and technology to educate and train the next generation of farmers.

Participants in this program will contribute to multiple aspects of Mid-Ohio Farm's operations, such as operating equipment and hand tools, performing farm tasks such as seeding, planting, irrigating, fertilizing, weeding, and overall maintenance of the farm as well as harvesting and processing of produce. They will also take part in managing the operations in our commercial greenhouses and assisting with production of the vertical towers, as needed.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Technical execution of multiple growing mediums leveraging innovative technology
  • Maintenance of assigned greenhouse equipment and growing systems.
  • Assist in the installation, operation, and maintenance of farm infrastructure.
  • Perform record keeping and reporting of day-to-day farm activities.
  • Provides direction, coordination, and training for volunteers with regard to daily workflow and processes.
  • Operate hand-tools and innovative farm equipment.
  • Follow and update standard operating procedures and processes to successfully and safely complete farm tasks.
  • Perform quality control checks of produce before distribution.
  • Complete special projects and planning in partnership with the Farm Managers.
  • Responsible for completing assigned coursework within curriculum.
  • Collaboration with external partners.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Certifications: High School Diploma/GED required. Candidate must have a valid Driver's License. Strong knowledge on vegetable and horticultural concepts preferred.

Skills/Competencies: Ability to work quickly and efficiently both independently and with the team while maintaining quality of work. Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to follow and give directions. Ability to keep organized, prioritize tasks, and make decisions to accomplish work. A strong desire to learn and push the boundaries of current farming techniques is required. An eagerness to test innovations and build upon successes and failures will be necessary. Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft programs is necessary.


JOB CONDITIONS:

This position is based in an urban farm setting and requires a person to work outside in all weather conditions performing manual labor. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting required. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Daily physical field work includes greenhouse seeding, planting, row-covering, fertilizing, weeding, harvesting, washing, and packing of produce.
