Tips on How to Make Your Application Stand Out

Here are some other things to consider to improve your application/resume:

  • Doble chek yor spellin
  • Explain your experience in light of the position you are applying for.  If you are looking for a management job, be sure to highlight those experiences where you have had some type of leadership/managerial role.
  • Do not say “See Resume” in the application.  Yes, it’s so much easier FOR YOU to tell the Hiring Manager to refer to your resume, however, the employment section is on the application for a reason – it asks questions that you probably are not covering in your resume.  Furthermore, it shows that you can go the extra mile by taking a few minutes to fill in the employment section because this job is worth it to you!
  • Complete the online application.  Its there for a reason and employers like to see it used.
  • Apply earlier rather than later.  The quicker you apply, the better it looks for you and it gets your name out there in front of HR and the Hiring Mangaer faster.  
  • CREATE A COVER LETTER!!!!  It may seem like a pain, but it definitely makes an applicant stand out, and moreover, gives you the opportunity to explain your experiences in a way that will mean something to the reviewer.   A cover letter is especially useful for those that trying to obtain employment in a field that is not reflected on their resume. 

Other things to consider beyond the application:

  • When you apply for something and you provide your contact information, be sure you check those forms of contact frequently for correspondence, whether it's checking your email, your snail mail, or keeping up with your voicemails.
  • When someone says they want to interview you, get excited! There's nothing less rewarding than interviewing someone who is nonchalant about the whole thing.
  • If you are coming to an interview, obviously be prepared, but BE ON TIME! If you are going to a new area of town, go there before your interview on a different day so you can be sure where it is.
