JOB SUMMARY:

The Farm Technician will contribute to multiple aspects of Mid-Ohio Farm's operations. The Farm Technician will complete day-to-day farm operations which entails operating equipment and hand tools, performing farm tasks such as seeding, planting, irrigating, fertilizing, weeding, and overall maintenance of the farm as well as harvesting and processing of produce. Primary responsibility of the Farm Technician will be to manage the operations in commercial greenhouses and to assist with production of the vertical towers, as needed. Secondary responsibility, to be shared by all Farm team members, is to assist in high tunnel operations. The various growing methods will require a quick study eager to learn new growing methods previously unseen in the community.


PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Technical execution of multiple growing mediums leveraging innovative technology
  • Maintenance of assigned greenhouse equipment and growing systems.
  • Assist in the installation, operation, and maintenance of farm infrastructure.
  • Perform record keeping and reporting of day-to-day farm activities.
  • Provides direction, coordination, and training for volunteers with regard to daily workflow and processes.
  • Operate hand-tools and innovative farm equipment.
  • Follow and update standard operating procedures and processes to successfully and safely complete farm tasks.
  • Perform quality control checks of produce before distribution.
  • Complete special projects and planning in partnership with Senior Farm Manager and Farm Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Education and Certifications: High School Diploma/GED required. College degree in agriculture or professional farm experience is preferred. Candidate must have a valid Driver's License. Strong knowledge on vegetable and horticultural concepts required.

Experience: At least 1-2 years of professional farming experience in farm setting or in collegiate setting is required. Knowledge in basic growing methods and practices is required. Experience in coordinating and training volunteers and interns is highly preferred.

Skills/Competencies: Ability to work quickly and efficiently both independently and with the team while maintaining quality of work. Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to follow and give directions. Ability to keep organized, prioritize tasks, and make decisions to accomplish work. A strong desire to learn and push the boundaries of current farming techniques is required. An eagerness to test innovations and build upon successes and failures will be necessary. Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft programs is necessary.


JOB CONDITIONS:

Working Conditions: This position is based in an urban farm setting and requires a person to work outside in all weather conditions performing manual labor. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting required. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Daily physical field work includes greenhouse seeding, planting, row-covering, fertilizing, weeding, harvesting, washing, and packing of produce. Occasional weekend hours will be required.
