Urban Farms of Central Ohio (UFCO), a program rooted in the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, are currently seeking interns for our 2017 internship program. This program offers interns the opportunity to gain both experience in small-scale farming practices and exposure to working within Columbus's urban neighborhoods.

We host interns in the spring, summer and fall. Start dates are flexible. Interns are required to commit to a minimum of 10-15 hours/week. Interns will establish a consistent weekly schedule with the Farm Manager at the start of the internship.

Interns get access to a bag worth of farm produce each week and have the unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the development a small-scale growing operation. While we cannot provide monetary compensation at this time, we can provide college credit for the internship.

Interns will be primarily placed at UFCO's Clarfield Farm. We are seeking 5-6 interns this summer to specialize in one the following area:

General Farm Assistance (3-4 interns):                                                                                                                                                                                     Primary roles include assisting in food production and farm maintenance, specifically in greenhouse operations, planting and harvesting at the farm. Interns will be immersed in the day-to-day work of a community urban farm. Interested candidates can also assist with leading volunteer groups. Specifically, interns will:

  • Receive training in organic vegetable production, everything from seeding to harvest.
  • Learn proper tool and equipment use, care and maintenance.
  • For interns at our Clarfield location: manage 1/4 acre You-Pick section.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsible behavior.
  • Willingness to learn and remain flexible and adaptive
  • Willingness and ability to work hard in less than ideal conditions.
  • Demonstrated passion, motivation, and creativity to improve their community.
  • Gardening or farming experience is a plus, but not required.

Job Conditions:

  • Farm activities require standing, bending, squatting, and heavy lifting, sometimes upwards of 50 lbs.
  • Dress should be modest, comfortable, casual clothing that you don't mind if it gets dirty. Dress in layers; wear sturdy shoes with closed toes. Interns should be prepared to work outdoors in all types of weather. Hats, sunscreen, rain coats are encouraged when necessary.

We have a rolling admission for the internship. Applicants should submit a resume and brief letter indicating relevant experiences, motivations, and what you hope to gain from this experience. Also include your availability for the internship. Please also indicate any college credit or other school requirements you may be looking to fulfill. If planning to receive credit, students are responsible for coordinating with their college to bring the appropriate paperwork.
