SUMMARY:
The Advocacy Manager will create and implement an advocacy agenda in a multi-jurisdictional system that increases awareness of the Foodbank's mission to end hunger. This will be completed through the management, surveillance and communications on public policy, legislation and regulations that could impact Mid-Ohio Foodbank, its network, government partnerships and clients served.


PRIMARY DUTIES:
• Guide development of annual Foodbank legislative agenda.
•  Cultivate and manages Mid-Ohio Foodbank's government relationships at federal, state, county and municipal level.
• Monitor and track policy positions and voting records around hunger, poverty, health and economic equality by public policy decision-makers (and candidates).
• Provide background/research, interprets data and summarizes research findings around public policy issues.
• Monitor hearings and navigate the trajectory of legislation from bill introduction to full chamber voting.
• Recruit and manage public policy volunteers as needed.
• Manage, write and package Foodbank Advocacy Network (FAN) activities and outreach by advocates.
• Create and distribute newsletters, policy briefs, talking points, action alerts, and support materials.
• Draft testimony as well as regularly advise, consult and inform public policy leaders while working to influence actions that strengthen the overall physical, mental and economic well-being of clients.
• Provides oral testimony on behalf of the Foodbank as directed
• Develops and manages recruitment, orientation and training tools for advocates to use in outreach efforts.
• Presents commentary on Foodbank's policy positions to stakeholder groups, elected officials and civic/business leaders.
• Leads peer community groups on advocacy efforts and develops partner and key agencies in their advocacy capacity.
• Acts as Foodbank liaison with Ohio Association of Foodbanks.
• Works in concert with Communications & Digital Media Manager to draft op-eds, Letter To the Editor responses and articles affirming the Foodbank's public policy positions.
• Develops, implements and manages Hunger Action Month activities in the community and with government organizations.
• Serves as an integral member of the Marketing/Communications and Public Affairs team.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Education and Certifications: Bachelor's degree with emphasis in public policy, communication, or non-profit management or a related field is required.

Experience:  At least four years of experience in government or government relations with agency experience required. Non-profit experience is preferred. Strong project management and leadership skills, time management and resource management skill with expertise of government organizations and functions is required.

Skills/Competencies:  Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required. Expertise in verbal and written communications with public policy decision makers, advocacy peers and legislative aides is required. Ability to manage multiple tasks, willingness to adjust to changing priorities, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment are required.

Working Conditions:  Normal Office Environment, ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
