Advocacy Coordinator for Mid-Ohio Foodbank
TITLE: Advocacy Coordinator
STATUS: Full Time, Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Vice President, Marketing & Communications
DIRECT REPORTS: None
SUMMARY:
The Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for monitoring, surveillance and communications on public policy, legislation and regulations that could impact Mid-Ohio Foodbank, its network and clients served.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Cultivates and coordinates Mid-Ohio Foodbank's government relationships at federal, state, county and municipal levels.
- Monitors positions and voting records around hunger, poverty, health and economic equality by public policy decision-makers (and candidates).
- Provides background/research on public policy issues, monitors hearings and navigates the trajectory of legislation from bill introduction to full chamber voting.
- Manages Foodbank Advocacy Network (FAN) activities and outreach by advocates.
- Drafts newsletters, action alerts, FAN advocate communications, and distributes to network.
- Drafts testimony and talking points to advance the Foodbank's position with public policy leaders and works to influence actions that strengthen the overall physical, mental and economic well-being of clients.
- Develops recruitment, orientation and training tools for advocates to use in outreach efforts.
- Coordinates w/peer community groups on advocacy efforts.
- Develops, implements and coordinates Hunger Action Month activities / tactics / outreach in community and with government organizations.
- Develops rapid response team concept and materials to mobilize advocates quickly around unexpected legislation.
- Serves as an integral member of the Marketing/Communications and Public Affairs team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Business or Marketing is required.
Experience: 3 - 5 years of experience in government agency or related experience preferred. Non-profit experience is required.
Knowledge: Strong project management, time management and resource management skill with expertise of government organizations and functions is required.
Skills/Competencies: Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required. Expertise in verbal and written communications with public policy decision makers, advocacy peers and legislative aides is required. Ability to manage multiple tasks, willingness to adjust to changing priorities, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment are required.
JOB CONDITIONS:
Working Conditions: Normal Office Environment, ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
