POSITION: Community Garden Coordinator REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Strategic Programs Director
STATUS: Part-time, Non-Exempt
DIRECT REPORTS: None
POSITION SUMMARY:
The part-time Community Garden Assistant will lead and maintain the Mid-Ohio Foodbank's on-site garden spaces to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. The ideal candidate will be a team player who can interact well with a wide-range of individuals from a variety of social, ethnic, and organizational backgrounds; is detail oriented, and is comfortable with working outside and is familiar with growing vegetables in Central Ohio. The Community Garden Coordinator will spend a majority of their time working outside with volunteers and some time allocated towards planning and coordinating garden activities.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Plan and maintain vegetable production in raised bed growing system and incorporate sustainable growing and operating practices.
- Design, purchase, and install garden structures and repair existing beds.
- Recruit, train, and host volunteers to assist with the maintenance of the garden using an online volunteer portal.
- Record and report on the progress of the garden.
- Plan and coordinate the installation of garden improvements and infrastructure such as tool storage.
- Operate hand-tools and other garden equipment such as a rototiller.
- Assist in building relationships with individuals, community groups and organizations, and businesses to volunteer at and sustain the garden.
- Provide tours in the community garden to volunteers, Foodbank visitors, and food pantry clients.
- Develop educational signage and activities for food pantry clients and Foodbank visitors.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Certifications: High School diploma or equivalent required. Valid driver's license required.
Experience: Minimum of one season in sustainable vegetable production experience.
Knowledge: Knowledge in basic sustainable, natural vegetable production methods and practices is required. Experience working with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds is required.
Skills/Competencies: Detail oriented. Strong interpersonal skills. Able to work independently and in teams. Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft programs is desirable. Some experience with customer service, public outreach, and/or community-building work is desirable. Experience working as an educator in a farm or garden setting is a plus.
JOB CONDITIONS:
Working Conditions: Must have the ability to work outside in all-weather performing manual garden labor as necessary.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting required. Flexible work schedule, evenings and weekend hours may be required. Must have reliable transportation.
