The Mid-Ohio Food Collective (MOFC) is ending hunger today, tomorrow and for a lifetime. We provide enough food for about 170,000 meals each and every day to help stabilize families, connect hungry neighbors with community services to help them toward economic sufficiency, and energize the community to address root causes of hunger so everyone thrives.

We are leading the conversation on Food Is Health by exploring innovative approaches for our hungry neighbors to access affordable and healthy food to measurably improve health outcomes.

As a leader within the Feeding America network, MOFC is building the technological platform with analytical features that will enable us to end hunger on a national level. We know that hunger does not exist in isolation. Hunger is rooted within the other social determinants of health (SDOH): education, affordable housing, childcare, transportation, sustainable income and healthcare. Data driven solutions emerging from the platform have the potential to reduce conditions impacting SDOH with an end goal of disrupting the poverty cycle and reducing food insecurity in our communities.

SUMMARY

We are welcoming the opportunity to have an intern join our Data and Insights Team at MOFC. This internship is ideal for someone looking to gain an in-depth knowledge in the design and buildout of a technology platform; gain hands-on experience with a dynamic team of data scientists, engineers, and statisticians; and to be a part of a team that will drive change in our communities. In this position you will work side-by-side with our lead data engineers, product developers, and data scientists to assist with the buildout of the data warehouse, related reporting infrastructure, and related dashboards. You will also assist with enabling access to recently built data products by building, deploying, and documenting APIs and dashboards.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Interact and communicate directly with the project team throughout the project lifecycle.
• Assist in preparation of reports and dashboards.
• Assist team in response to data requests and troubleshooting data issues.
• Assist with process documentation and defining requirements.
• Act as a customer facing advocate for the Mid-Ohio Food Collective.
• Identify new practices to streamline workflow and improve efficiency.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Extract, transform, and load data from source environments to staging environments, and from staging environments to data marts
• Build APIs to enable easier access to data elements
• Build programmatic data visualizations
• Document all processes and actions
• Integrate refactor code written by junior developers and integrate with existing code bases

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Relevant coursework and experience in Computer Science, Modeling, Data Analytics, and related fields

Skills/Competencies:

• Is detail-oriented, has an inquisitive mind, and is comfortable working with data and coding.
• Strong analytical and math skills with a willingness to learn new methods and software programs.
• Applies critical thinking skills and logic to solve problems and identify patterns and trends in data.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Coding skills in languages such as MySQL, SQL, Python, R or similar are preferred.
• Data mining and data QC experience is a plus.
• Ability to work effectively individually and in a team environment.
• Experience with advanced Microsoft Excel functions, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
• Additional skills working with visualization software such as R Shiny is a plus.
• Familiar with database design
