Director of Platform Engineering, ReadySkill

SUMMARY: Under the general guidance of the Chief Platform Officer, this position accomplishes organizational objectives by planning, developing, evaluating, implementing, deploying, and supporting technology and business initiatives that meet strategic goals identified on the ReadySkill platform and the broader Food Collective operation. The Director provides technical and operational leadership to the platform engineering group as well as working in a cross-team environment. The Director will need to collaborate extensively with the various organizational teams working in the Collective and within the broader community to ensure appropriate solutions delivery.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

• Lead a team of ReadySkill platform engineers and develop the capabilities of that team through hiring, outsourcing, mentoring, and hands-on management.
• Work with the team to define an operational rhythm that balances high output with sustainable development. Work to define the policies and procedures that guide the team into high performance.
• Architect solutions and guide the technical direction of the MOFC architecture for the ReadySkill product and other MOFC initiatives as directed.
• Balance near-term priorities with longer-term bets, exercising strong judgment about which problems need a just-enough solution and which require deeper investment.
• Represent the platform team across the organization, from understanding top-line business priorities and aligning the team's work to them, to managing the largest budget items (e.g., Azure/AWS), to ensuring our platforms meets performance, reliability, and information security requirements.
• Ensure the ReadySkill platform is available 24/7 by defining the livesite operations, prioritizing the right investments to support this goal, and directly contributing to operations as needed.
• Work closely with MOFC Information Technology to scale the technical infrastructure to support next-generation technology initiatives at the collective.
• Contribute knowledge and guidance to other MOFC operational groups as appropriate.
• Collaboratively participates in vision-driven project work and assignments as a strategic thought partner, as well as a realistic barometer for testing new and innovative ideas and initiatives for the organization.
• Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following safety practices and policies.
• Participate in special projects as requested.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Education and Certifications: Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent work experience.

Experience:

• Experience leading teams and scaling infrastructure in high growth environments, especially in a startup environment.
• Desire to build an inclusive and diverse engineering culture where team members are continually invested in to grow their professional and managerial skills.
• Excellent problem solving and judgement skills. Ability to understand the balance between business needs and engineering and to communicate that balance to both groups.
• Ability to juggle multiple requirements prioritizing in the most efficient manner.
• Take a strong sense of ownership in the platform and are excited to collaborate with our many partners to successfully guide the platform forward.
• Passion to help others.
• Strong communication skills.
• Broad experience with programming languages such as PHP, C#, Javascript, etc.
• Database design and manager/administrator.
• Experience in architecting and developing cloud-based distributed systems. (Micro-Service Architecture)
• Experience in distributed team development. (Onshore and offshore)
• Experience with Git, AzureDevOps, Docker, Kubernetes, Jira, and other modern development tooling.
• Cloud provider experience (Azure preferred).
• Knowledge of Food Pantry and Foodbank operations would be nice to have.

Skills/Competencies: Strong organization, communication and people skills are required. The role of Director of Platform Engineering interacts with both technical and non-technical individuals inside and outside of the Mid-Ohio Food Collective. The Director must be able to communicate effectively in all situations and provide leadership when needed. The Director is ideally someone with a broad base of technical and leadership experience and will be looked to as a subject matter expert on issues of technology within the Mid-Ohio Food Collective and is expected to contribute their expertise to the organization when needed. The Director must represent the Mid-Ohio Food Collective with professionalism when interacting with clients, volunteers, community members and the Food Collective staff.

JOB CONDITIONS:
