Transportation Manager

JOB TITLE: TRANSPORATION MANAGER

STATUS: FULL-TIME, EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

DIRECT REPORTS: Lead Drivers, Class A and B CDL Drivers


SUMMARY: Manages the Mid-Ohio Foodbank (MOF) transportation department and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations. Ensures on time pickup and delivery of all MOF transportation related duties. Works closely with Transportation Analyst for ongoing process improvements, as well as development of departmental metrics. Ensures systems are in place to help MOF achieve its organizational goals and comply with all DOT and MOF safety policies.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Manages the daily operations of the transportation department
  • Manage drivers and ensures productive use of all resources, including assets, equipment and team members
  • Understand, interpret and implement DOT and other state and federal regulations
  • Oversee scheduling of all donation pickup requests
  • Partners with Transportation Analyst for fleet related maintenance
  • Partners with Safety Manager to ensure driver compliance files are updated as needed
  • Maintain accurate data in routing system to accomplish highest transportation service while maximizing resources which includes monitoring and adjustments of routes as needed
  • Conducts driver meetings on a routine and regular basis to improve communication of departmental objectives
  • Mentors, trains and develops team members to gain efficiencies in fleet operations
  • Implements and supports safety policies and procedures for team through partnership with Safety Manager
  • Partners with Safety Manager to oversee investigations of all accidents, determines root cause and develops preventative actions
  • Contributes to the development of departmental metrics and reports to identify areas for efficiency without loss of exceptional service
  • Partners with other MOF managers to maintain effective transportation operations.
  • Manages operational budget for transportation department
  • Manages employees including performance management, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions
  • Assists Director of Operations with special projects
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with MOF team members and stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Education and Certifications:High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s degree in Operations/Logistics strongly preferred. Class B CDL required, Class A preferred. Must have a valid US DOT Medical Card. Employees must obtain the required Federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the MOF. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an employee fails or is unable to obtain required licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the MOF, the employee will be ineligible to continue in the position.

Experience: Minimum of five years of fleet management experience including supervision. Proven experience working with transportation, routing, and fleet management systems such as PeopleNet, Appian, RoadNet, Nextraq etc. At least 1 year of experience driving a commercial straight truck driving experience, including hands-on freight pickup and delivery. Knowledge of general logistics operations including fleet maintenance, DOT safety regulations, and route planning. Working knowledge of fleet management systems as well as Microsoft Office. Demonstrated understanding of principles of Logistics and Distribution. Experience operating forklifts (propane and/or electric), electric pallet jacks/riders (4ft and 8ft) is strongly preferred. Working knowledge of truck and general warehouse machinery operations. Ability to maneuver truck in non-industrial areas.

Skills/Competencies: Ability to manage and motivate staff members. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Good mathematical skills. Strong verbal, non-verbal, and written. Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and in a team environment. Excellent customer focus and customer service skills. Ability to learn, adapt quickly to organizational change and to identify and respond quickly to real time market/environmental needs.

JOB CONDITIONS:

Working Conditions: Must work in office and warehouse environment, and must operate a commercial vehicle. Safety sensitive position due to regular interaction with heavy machinery. Must be able to: perform moderate to heavy physical labor (lift 30 lbs. frequently and 75 lbs. occasionally). Daily walking, bending, reaching, pushing and pulling (300 lbs. with use of manual pallet jack.). Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and reaching. Must work in sub-freezing temperatures for extended periods of time. Some night and weekend work required.
